- 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 12-I, W-4795. Rarity-5. No Coulter, Shaggy Mane. Fine-12 (PCGS). 133.3 grains. An appealing specimen of the only die variety to use Maris Reverse I. Lovely light brown with mostly glossy surfaces. A bit of darker scale is present around the plow and the end of the plowbar, but it adds nothing but some contrast. The central obverse is a bit softly struck, revealing some inherent planchet texture, but the centering is good and other design elements are bold. The reverse is aligned to lower left, and the dies are rotated just counterclockwise from medal turn. This is Die State 2, hallmarked by the central obverse weakness that costs the lower horsehead its definition. This isn't Condition Census but is unquestionably nicer than most.
