- 1864 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-387, Pollock-455. Rarity-6+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). OGH--Second Generation. Transitional issue. From the regular-issue obverse die of the year, the reverse as adopted in 1866 with IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle.
A fresh and vibrant specimen awash in a blend of handsome rose red, golden-brown, and gray-brown patina. There are no sizeable or otherwise outwardly distracting blemishes, allowing one to focus on the razor sharp strike that touches even the most intricate elements of the design. Close to full Gem status apart from light hairlining to the obverse that we mention solely for accuracy.
The uspatterns.com website calls this: "The so-called transitional quarter using the reverse of 1866-1891. These and the other 'with motto' patterns of this date and also 1863 and possibly 1865 are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and offered with restrikes of other denominations in complete sets. The reverse die used here is the same as on the 1869 and 1870 trial pieces with die rust between the eagle's right (observer's left) wing and the olive branch. The die state is later than on the 1869 pieces."
