- 1846 Seated Liberty Quarter. Briggs 4-F. Proof-65 (NGC).
A stunning Gem that retains the watery essence of the highly reflective fields, toned with a blush of orange-gold on the obverse and reverse, with traces of aqua and crimson favoring the rims. The strike is absolute and precise with each star, curl, feather and letter brought up to the absolute restraint of the die during the striking process. Often these early proofs acquire deep toning which could mask minor hairlines or other handling issues; not so here as the delicate mirror fields have a thin veil of toning and any faint signs of handling are visible with a strong loupe. The reverse has a rather prominent die line, as in the die, extending up from the left wing of the eagle to just left of the beak; other die file lines from the engraver touching up the die are present as well.
Between the two major grading services, PCGS and NGC, a total of four examples have been seen at this grade level, excelled by none, and furthermore it is entirely possible that there may be duplicate submissions in this small tally. Regardless, the present coin is an outstanding Gem proof that will be a highlight in any collection it graces.
