1795 BB-20, B-2. Rarity-3. Head of 1795, Two Leaves. MS-65 (NGC). Superb cartwheel lustre cascades over finely toned surfaces, an even deep gray that incorporates pale violet and deep blue on the obverse and shows more prominent violet, gold, and blue tones on the reverse. A simply exceptional coin in terms of condition, trailing only the Earle-Eliasberg "presentation" piece in quality among all 1795 Flowing Hair dollars with the two Leaves reverse. The strike is superb nearly everywhere and shows only light softness at the absolute centers, where a batch of parallel adjustment marks are visible on the obverse, mostly hidden within Liberty's hair. The surfaces are as pristine as can be for the grade, with only a very thin old scratch noted beneath stars 12 through 14 and no readily discernable contact marks. This coin is really a joy to behold and study, a fully lustrous gem 1795 dollar whose color bespeaks originality. The beautiful Koshkarian coin, a more common BB-27 that showed some peripheral obverse adjustment marks, sold for $264,500. This piece's exemplary condition makes it a target for inclusion in a dramatic high-grade type set. NGC Census: 1; none finer. Variety Notes: BB-20 represents one of several varieties with the two-leaves reverse and the Head of '95 obverse. On the obverse, Liberty's lowest curl is broken and bisected by star one. The reverse displays 19 berries on the wreath, nine on the left branch and 10 on the right, with three berries beneath the eagle's wing on the left and four berries beneath the wing on the right.
