- HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER RARITY! It's been a while since a nice example of this ever-popular issue has come up for sale at auction. This coin will not disappoint! Intermingled hues of light to medium gray are present on both sides. There are light circulation marks in the right obverse field, on the middle of Liberty's neck and above the date, but all are quite well concealed and do not detract from the overall appeal of the piece. The devices are well struck for the assigned grade with lots of detail remaining despite the plug and reverse adjustment marks running parallel and vertical in the top 1/3 of the coin on the reverse. These are typical as often the planchets were overweight and at times a mint employee would use a file to shave off some of the silver to bring the planchet into the specified weight standard for the issue prior to striking. On occasion, the planchet would be underweight, requiring the addition of a silver plug, a small round silver disc that was centered over the planchet and was struck between the planchet and the obverse die. On this coin, remnants of the added plug can be seen on both the obverse and reverse. There are no adjustment marks on the obverse, which is nice.
PCGS 10, NGC 0. No recent auction records are available. We sold a wholesome example in 2017 for $20,563, but nothing has traded hands at auction for the grade except a CAC graded piece that sold in April of 2018 for $33,600. If you have been seeking a nice middle grade Silver Plug dollar for your collection, don’t dither, you may not get another chance for another 7-8 years to pick up a nice one! She’s worthy of a strong bid, don’t walk away disappointed! Best of luck!
