- Undated (1853-1854) Octagonal $1. BG-501. Rarity-5-. Liberty Head, "Humbert" Eagle Reverse. MS-61 (PCGS).
Flashy semi-prooflike quality for this popular and eagerly sought design type in the California small denomination gold series. Wisps of pale rose iridescence enhance otherwise golden-olive surfaces, both sides with impressively sharp striking detail. A shallow planchet void in the lower left obverse field is as made, and there are no significant marks. The modest rarity rating should not fool one into thinking that BG-501 is an easy variety to locate. The issue is extremely popular with collectors due to the fact that the "Humbert" eagle reverse is similar in style to that of the contemporary Humbert $50 "slugs" that circulated in California during the Gold Rush era. Additionally, the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference notes that this issue "Usually comes circulated." Scarce from a market availability standpoint and rare in Mint State, this BU example is sure to see spirited bidding among astute specialists in this series. BG Die State II.
