- GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Dollar, 1909-B. Bombay Mint. PCGS MS-64+ Gold Shield. KM-T5; Mars-BTD1; Prid-19. Tied for third finest certified of the clean date with five other examples on the PCGS population report, only surpassed by 11 other pieces (PCGS MS 65[10] & MS 65+[1]. A fascinating survivor showing severe die degradation on both sides indicative of prolonged usage not normally encountered in this series. Upon close inspection the obverse exhibits several long thin curved cracks, the most noticeable one starts as a straight crack at 9 o'clock that goes into the field just past the "O" of "ONE" bisected by a perpendicular crack in an upward curve through Britannia's hand continuing to her face with traces that suggest termination on her upper forearm resting on the shield. A second less noticeable crack appears at about 4 o'clock on the solid central inner border extending out in a steep downward curve under Britannia's feet continuing in an upward direction that finally terminates at about 9 o'clock near the edge. The reverse displays fairly aggressive dies polish lines primarily concentrated in the center with four straight cracks unevenly spaces around the circumference that extend from the edge into the central fields and devices. A beautifully executed piece exhibiting light mottled tone while boasting strong satiny surfaces with minor trivial breaks in the smooth lustrous fields. A highly interesting example with lots of character and subtle yet distinct diagnostics perfect for the academic collector with a discerning eye looking for completeness. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
