- 1868 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC. A beautiful jewel with violet and navy blue toning that grows deeper towards the borders. The central elements are richly frosted and starkly contrast the reflective fields. The Guide Booksuggests a Proof mintage for the date of 600 pieces, though that figure probably refers to silver Proof sets and may not take into account pieces sold individually. While about 550 remain from this original mintage, just about 180 of these are known at the Gem level. This superior Cameo example ranks among the finest known survivors, with only 4 coins graded finer by PCGS in this category. Approval by CAC further emphasizes the superior quality.
