- 1812/1 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-102a. Rarity-2. Small 8. MS-62 (PCGS).
Flashy and lustrous with swaths of bronze and navy blue iridescence around the devices. The fields are delightfully smooth for this grade level, with evidence of die clashing prominent on the obverse. Nicely centered and attractive. As with all early half dollar overdates, the 1812/1 Overton-102 and its 102a die state offered here are among the more popular varieties in the series. While the O-101 Large 8 overdate is one of the most elusive rarities from the era, the 1812/1 Small 8 is still a challenging variety in it's own right. The current MS-62 (PCGS) examples sits just shy of the Condition Census for the variety, landing only two points below the MS-64 (PCGS) Newman specimen. Traceable back nearly 50 years, this is an important offering for specialists.
