- FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS An absolutely AMAZING GEM quality O-107 with the experimental III edge device, and is the second finest of all III Edge 1809 half dollars. The fifth edition Overton Census is 65,65,63,63,62, and this coin, having been called GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED in 1984 and 1997 is likely the second MS65 listed. This fabulous coin boasts a vibrant, brilliant, frosty mint bloom that glows boldly on both sides. Sweeping cartwheel bands highlight the amazing quality surfaces. The obverse and reverse peripheries show stunning blue and crimson accents that blend into a dusting of clear gold across the centers. Pristine fields and sharply struck devices compliment each other quite beautifully adding to the exceptional eye appeal. From the beginning of the denomination in 1794, the edge had a lettered device which read FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. The lettered edge was placed on the planchets by running them through an edge milling or castasing machine. Two dies which split the phrase in two parts: FIFTY CENTS OR on one and HALF A DOLLAR on the other. In 1809, reeding (III) or cross hatches (XXX) were applied to the device on some of these. It is thought that by adding the III or XXX would make the process more efficient. Don Taxay estimated that only about 20% of all 1809 half dollars produced had these experimental edges. While designed to make the process more efficient, these edge devices were utilized on 1809 halves only. Ex John Glenn Halsell, Jr. Collection, Stack's March Sale, Part II, March 1984, lot 560; Stack's, December 1997, lot 2207; Eugene Gardner Collection; Heritage's sale of the Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part III, May 2015, lot 98447 (as PCGS MS64 CAC). PCGS 3, NGC 0, CAC 2. There are two in MS64+ and there are just three finer (all varieties with the III edge). The other coin was the Chicago Collection MS64+ that realized $30,550 in September 2021. This coin, is in our opinion nicer, and realized $32,900 in May 2015. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $36,000 and we expect that level will be surpassed when the hammer falls. This is an AMAZING coin that will delight any collector: type, date, or variety. Good luck. Cert. Number 28790834 PCGS # 39383
