This is a very interesting 1817 Capped Bust half dollar. Struck from a later state of the O-103 die pair (the Punctuated Date) variety. The Overton-listed "a" model is defined by the lack of the die dot between 1 and 7. A later state, listed in Herrman's AMBPR, called O-103'b', is defined by a new smaller die dot between the 1 and 7, clearly displayed on this VERY CHOICE and brilliant example. The O-103'b' is called "probably R-5". Solidly in the Condition Census for the variety, this one ranks among the finest. Brilliant, untoned silver surfaces shimmer with a bold cartwheel luster over frosted surfaces. The faintest blush of clear, pearlescent gold graces both sides in places, adding to the seductive visual allure. The devices are crisply rendered despite the later die state and the eye appeal is amazing! PCGS 34, NGC 18, CAC 8. There are four in MS63+ at PCGS, and only one ever sold back in our February 2016 Regency Auction XVI sale. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $8,000. Scarce finer, this is a perfect coin for the type collector, but also offers much to the advanced die variety collector. Good luck. Cert. Number 44922885 PCGS # 6109
