Magnificent Gem 1787 Fugio Cent 1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 13-X, W-6855. Rarity-1. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. MS-66 BN (PCGS). A truly remarkable example of this perennially popular die pairing for the historic Fugio cent. Aglow with satiny mint luster, both sides also show an unusual abundance of faded rose-red color for a coin that has been certified in the BN category. Toning is dominant, of course, and shows soft flint-gray undertones to otherwise medium brown patina. The strike is well centered on both sides, scant denticulation along the left obverse border a minor feature that is easily overlooked. All design elements are sharply rendered and crisp, the legend MIND YOUR BUSINESS entirely legible to include a partial B and final S in the word BUSINESS. There is not a single troublesome blemish, the impressive MS-66 numeric grade fully justified, and provenance concerns alone compel us to mention a faint reverse carbon spot close in to the junction of the two rings outside the letters ES in STATES. This is an easy die marriage of the type to attribute: the obverse is heavily clashed (as struck) in the field and the reverse is the workhorse die X with a prominent die crack (also as made) from 6 o'clock on the border. The Bank of New York Hoard reportedly contained 726 Newman 13-Xs out of a total of 1,641 Fugio cents. It is also one of the most available Fugio die marriages in Mint State. What sets the present example apart from the typically offered piece, however, is the exceptional quality and eye appeal. A lovely coin that is sure to find its way into an advanced cabinet.
