THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION A lovely, totally original BD-1. A challenging Rarity-4+ with perhaps only 75-100 examples known to survive today. All 1796 half eagles are overdates, struck from this single pair of dies. Most known examples are either lower grade than the present piece, or have flaws that preclude third party grading. Only light friction and wear is seen on this AU50. Ample mint luster survives on the surfaces. A wonderful coppery-orange tone accents the sharply struck devices. A shallow mark on Liberty's neck and a tiny contact mark in front of Liberty's nose are the only noteworthy marks, and they serve as pedigree markers for this CHOICE example of this IMPORTANT RARITY. For an AU early gold piece, the eye appeal is spectacular. PCGS 3, NGC 2, CAC 1. This coin has been off the auction market since June 2008, when it sold for $69,000 in the Stack's sale of the Husky Collection. The current Collectors Universe value is $60,000 and the CAC CPG value is $60,600. RARE in all grades, especially so with CAC approval. What a great piece! Cert. Number 21374141 PCGS # 8067.00
