- 1842 O Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-55 (NGC).
Warmly patinated in honey-orange and olive-gold, this handsome piece exhibits a typical quality of strike for the issue, although there is only trivial rub to explain the Choice AU grade from NGC. The third rarest New Orleans Mint quarter eagle issue (per Doug Winter, 2020), the 1842-O has an extant population of fewer than 200 coins from a mintage of 19,800 pieces. This is a conditionally scarce survivor whose appeal is further enhanced by an impressive provenance. The NGC insert attributes this coin as a "Large O" variety of the issue, which is curious because the O mintmark is small in size and, in any event, there is only a single die marriage known.
Provenance: Ex Charles T. Steigerwalt, November 1893; John H. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) sale of the United States Gold Coin Collection (Eliasberg), October 1982, lot 123.
PCGS# 7726. NGC ID: 25GK.
