1839 Gobrecht Silver Dollar. Name Removed. Judd-105 Restrike, Pollock-117. Rarity-6. Dannreuther Reverse Die State d. Silver. Plain Edge... The obverse is mostly silver-steel with a dusting of light russet-gold over the mirror surfaces and frosted devices. Similar toning on the reverse but there is an additional swath of electric blue on the left side. The fields are fully reflective and the devices show a satiny, semi-reflective sheen when examined under a light. There are fewer than a dozen known of this issue, struck in silver with a plain edge; the timing is uncertain just when this Restrike was coined, but it was much later as the reverse die displays the usual light cracks in the legend. The Judd-105 issue was coined after the Judd-104 pieces -- some of which are known to have circulated. In contrast, the later Restrikes of the Judd-105 did not circulate and most known retain their full Proof finish and were struck in Die Alignment III with a plain edge. Furthermore these show evidence of where the mint filed down the irregular wire edge and, as here, traces of original adjustment marks are seen around the obverse rim.&nbsp;<br /> These Gobrecht patterns have been slow to yield their secrets despite considerable numismatic study. In the prior generation, Walter Breen and others have put forth theories as to the timing of these Restrikes; further research by Craig Sholley and John Dannreuther has helped determine much, yet mysteries still remain. One of the most intriguing facts is the "Name Removed from Base" discovery of John Dannreuther in the last decade. Close scrutiny of the present coin finds the shadowy remains of C GOBRECHT in the base just above the date, nearly entirely effaced from the master hub. This discovery was made in 2006 when John Dannreuther was studying a Restrike Gobrecht dollar with this feature. Foreshadowing the removal of the V.D.B. from the lower reverse dies of Lincoln cents many years later, Gobrecht's placement of his name was a l
