- SCOTLAND. Scotland - Mexico. 5 Shillings 6 Pence, ND (ca. 1815). PCGS AU-50.
Manville-116 & pl. 54, 1 (this coin, illustrated). "S D" in script over a valuation of "5 : 6," with all stampings read retrograde; all on the obverse of a Mexican 1777-Mo FM 8 Reales of Charles III. An interesting aspect of this VERY RARE and heretofore unknown counterstamp is that, unlike others of its era, it is presented as retrograde. Given the valuation, the dating likely emanates from the middle of the second decade of the 19th century, as the fluctuation in the valuation of silver after that made this practice far less useful and expedient. Attractively toned and highly interesting, and undoubtedly an example that should excite the specialists in this series on account of its published nature and rather extensive and important pedigree.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
