- 1852 Wass, Molitor & Co. $10. K-3. Rarity-7. Small Head. VF-35 (NGC).
Desirable mid grade quality for this elusive variety of the 1852 Wass, Molitor & Co. $10 issue. Warmly patinated in olive-gold, both sides also exhibit intermingled pale rose highlights as the surfaces rotate under a light. Soft striking detail and a moderately abraded appearance are commensurate with the type. On the other hand, all devices are fully outlined and there are few singularly distracting marks. An intriguing variety, the digit 2 in the date is "plugged," presumably because the die was initially dated 1851 before the 1 was drilled out and replaced with a 2. The 1852 K-2 goes by a host of names with Small Head, used here, following the terminology that has been used in the Guide Booksince its first publication in the late 1940s. Edgar Adams, however, used the term Large Head in his 1912 work California Private Gold Coinagee, while Walter Breen and Don Kagin came up with the term Long Neck during the 1980s. Regardless of how it is described, this variety is elusive in all grades, this being our only offering in recent memory. Sure to result in spirited bidding among advanced Territorial gold collectors.
