- 1891 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. FS-801. Doubled Die Reverse. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC.
Although most known circulation strike 1891 quarter eagles were struck from a doubled reverse die, the variety is very pronounced and further enhances this coin's appeal. Doubling is boldest on the letters in the word AMERICA, with the letters in the word OF and the D in the denomination also lightly doubled.
This is an exceptionally well preserved survivor of a scarce, low mintage issue. Fully stuck throughout, both sides also exhibit lovely satin luster that is vibrant from the rims to the centers. Essentially untoned overall, this is an attractive and solidly graded near-Gem that is sure to please. Produced during an era when much of the United States Mint's focus for gold coinage was on double eagles, it should perhaps come as no surprise to read that the circulation strike delivery of the 1891 quarter eagles amounted to just 10,960 pieces. With so few examples originally produced this issue is understandably scarce in all grades. Coins of this quality are in the distinct minority among the survivors.
PCGS Population: 7; 2 finer (MS-65 finest).
