- Impressive Medallic 5 Goldgulden
GERMANY. Hildesheim. Medallic 5 Goldgulden, 1528 (Struck between 1614-20). Karl V (1519-56). NGC MS-61.
15.3 gms. Fr-1310(lower weight); Buck-Bahrf-579; KM-M1.2. VERY RARE. Robed bust of Karl V right within solid and beaded borders, legend around; Reverse: Elaborate helmeted arms of Hildesheim flanked with draperies. This type was struck in the early years of the 17th century despite the date of 1528. Karl V (Charles V) with his expansive dominion was the first to be described by Fray Francisco de Ugalde as "el imperio en el que nunca se pone el sol" (the empire on which the sun never sets) in the early 16th century. It is theorized that this type was struck as a centennial commemorative of his German coronation in 1520. Sharply struck with slight doubling in the obverse legend. Attractive mottled orange tone.
Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000.
Provenance: Ex: Fritz Rudolf Kunker Auction #129 October 8, 2007, Lot #652.
