- 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Motto. MS-65 (NGC). A satiny deep honey-gold gem with intensely active cartwheel luster and bold design motifs. The obverse field is particularly satiny in appearance, and few marks of note are seen anywhere, even under low magnification. The Bowers reference on the series notes the following: "While many 1908 With Motto twenties seem to have been shipped to Europe, it is likely that many were retained in America and melted in the 1930s. Today Mint State pieces are fairly scarce. MS-64 coins are especially so, and any finer coin is a rarity." For the record, just 30 examples of the date have been called MS-65 or finer by NGC, 10 of those in the "or finer" category; perhaps some small proportion of those 30 pieces represents resubmissions.
