- A beautiful GEM 1844 half dime, struck from the FS-301 die variety, which is noted for its boldly repunched date; the first 3 digits of the date were not punched in the correct position (the 1 was too high, 84 too low), then repunched in their correct position. Though the variety is not noted on the holder, this example is clearly one of the finest known (PCGS has attributed 1 in MS65); Gene Gardner owned the finest NGC-graded example (an MS66 CAC). A warm, glowing luster clings to the surfaces of this GEM, serving as a profound back light to the wonderful antique album-style toning. The devices are exceptionally well struck up and the surfaces are wonderfully preserved with nary a mark worthy of mention to be found anywhere, even with the aid of a strong glass. The eye appeal is tops, we do not know why CAC did not bean this beautiful early example of the type. Needless to say, it passed muster with us! PCGS 17, NGC 28. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $1,250 but this coin has a similar look to the PCGS/CAC coin that sold in the recent ANA auction for $2,880. This is a very nice example for the type and variety, worthy of a strong bid. Cert. Number 42551406 PCGS # 4333
