- 1899 United States Assay Commission Medal. White Metal. 33 mm. By Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan. JK AC-43c. Rarity-5. MS-62 (NGC).
Lustrous silver gray surfaces display a matte-like texture. Boldly to sharply struck throughout.
Although the Mint director's Annual Reportstates that 40 silver and 10 bronze impressions were produced of the 1899 Assay Commission medal, there is no mention of white metal strikings. Presumably even fewer specimens were produced in this format and, indeed, we can recall handling only two examples: the present specimen, ex Dreyfuss; and the Brand-Keusch specimen cataloged as Uncirculated in our (Stack's) November 2008 sale. A rare and significant offering for the specialist.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the David W. Dreyfuss Collection, April 1986, lot 5052; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2006, lot 6597. Lot tag included.
