详细说明: 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 12-G, W-4790. Rarity-4. Date Under Plow, No Coulter. VG-10 (PCGS). One of the scarce and popular No Coulter varieties, a Rahway Mint product from dies by Benjamin Dudley. The golden-tan surfaces are pleasing to the unaided eye despite the even wear pattern. Low magnification reveals faint, evenly distributed porosity, otherwise no marks of any size are to be found. For comparison purposes we go back to the Taylor catalog (B&M, March 1987), lot 2162, to which the present coin is a near physical match, at least for sharpness; the Taylor piece, however, exhibited far heavier marks than the present coin. The New Jersey copper varieties with a missing coulter -- the diagonal bar that hangs below the plow beam on most obverse dies in the series -- are uniformly scarce to rare regardless of die pairing. The present piece is a nice representative example, all things considered, and appears finer to the naked eye than our description suggests.
