- 1913 Indian Eagle. Proof-66 (NGC). In keeping with its position near the end of the proof Indian Eagle series, the 1913 is one of the rarest issues of its type. In terms of total number of coins believed extant, in fact, only the 1912 and 1915 are more elusive than the 1913. And in high grades (read: Proof-65 or finer), the 1913 is actually the rarest proof Indian Ten after only the final-year 1915. Not only is the original mintage of this issue a mere 71 coins, but attrition was high due to the widespread melting of undistributed examples. Writing in the 2008 revision to the book A Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins: 1907-1933 by David W. Akers, Jeff Ambio asserts that only 20-35 examples of this issue have survived for the benefit of today's advanced collectors.
In keeping with the method of manufacture that the United States Mint used to produce 1913-dated proof gold coinage, this 1913 exhibits a fine-grain matte, or sandblast finish to both sides. The color is more vivid than typically seen for the issue, and we note a lovely endowment of orange-khaki patina throughout. Fully struck and overall smooth, we see few blemishes, and certainly none that are outwardly distracting. One of several important matte proof rarities that we are offering in this sale, this 1913 Eagle is destined for inclusion in another advanced cabinet.
