- 1870 Pattern Dollar. Judd-1004, Pollock-1136. Rarity-7-. Proof-63 BN (NGC). Liberty is seated left on the obverse with a free-standing liberty pole behind the portrait. Her left hand holds an olive branch while her right hand supports a shield over which a scroll inscribed LIBERTY is draped. Thirteen stars ring the periphery and the date 1870 is below. The reverse is the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1870 Seated Liberty Silver Dollars. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.<br /> Richly toned and fully original, both sides are layered in brassy-copper and copper-gray patina, the bolder color confined to the protected areas around the devices. Crisply struck and quite smooth overall, this piece would probably have secured a higher numeric grade were the surfaces a bit more vibrant in appearance.
