- The first pattern for the gold dollar denomination, struck 13 years before the series began in 1849. Authorized in what would become the Coinage Act of January 18, 1837, which authorized the gold dollar denomination, and it has been suggested this was done because of the popularity of the Bechtler gold dollars that were circulating in the south. Christian Gobrecht is credited for the design, which features a Liberty Cap within a burst of rays on the obverse, similar to contemporary coins of the Mexican Republic, and the denomination within a palm wreath on the reverse. Struck in gold with a plain edge, this pattern is considered R-5, making this one of the only collectible pattern issues struck in gold (aside from Stellas which are technically patterns but collected along the regular U.S. gold series, which has catapulted them into the high five figure price range for even the lower quality examples). The presently offered example has a rich golden color that really beams with the awe inspiring mirrors. Every detail is fully struck up. Close examination with a powerful glass reveals a few light die lines. PCGS 1, NGC 1, CAC 2. PCGS reports two coins finer on their Population Report in the CAMEO designation. The most recent example to sell was in the 2014 ANA sale and was not CAC-approved and it realized $30,550. Because of this, the CU value is listed at $32,000. We think that this CAC-approved example should bring that or more. If you collect Gold dollars or patterns and would like an affordable gold pattern STRUCK in GOLD in GEM condition, this is a coin that should be of interest to you! We can see intense bidding for this beautiful jewel. Cert. Number 32601725 PCGS # 411795
