"1781" (1783) Libertas Americana Medal. Original. Paris Mint. By Augustin Dupre. Adams-Bentley 15, Betts-615. Copper. AU-50 (PCGS).
An aesthetically pleasing example of what is perhaps the most famous, and certainly the most eagerly sought medal from the early American era. Sharply struck with most design elements retaining full detail, light rub from handling is evident on the high points, especially the hair curls above the ear where the design is in highest relief. Handsome olive-copper patina with glints of lighter autumn-orange that are mostly confined to the protected areas around the design elements. Scattered handling marks are mostly small in size and singularly inconspicuous to the eye, accuracy alone compelling us to mention a few faint pin scratches in the left obverse field. The texture is hard and satiny, although a touch of curious glossiness is noted.
Ranked number one in the 100 Greatest Medals and Tokensbook by a unanimous vote of those polled, if there was ever an American medal to include alongside the coins of the United States Mint, the Libertas Americana medal is the one. Its designs inspired the earliest Mint engravers and Mint Director Elias Boudinot received a silver specimen in his position as president of the Continental Congress at the time of this medal's production. This is a desirable example for the grade that would be a nice addition to an advanced cabinet.
