1794 S-41 R3 PCGS graded XF40.Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with splashes of olive brown toning on both sides. The surfaces are mostly smooth but there are traces of microscopic roughness in a few of the more darkly toned areas. The only marks are a rim dent below the 94, a rim nick over the left side of the T in LIBERTY, and a small planchet flake on the N in ONE (as struck). Later die state, Breen VII, with extensive die cracks on the reverse but none on the obverse. The edge is neatly inked "H-14" (which is an error since this variety is Hays-19/Maris-14). Regardless it comes with a marvelous provenance that has been traced back well over 100 years. Previously housed in an NGC slab graded AU50 (NGC label #508574-001 included, and it shows the attribution and Rasmussen provenance). This is the plate coin for the variety in the Provenance Gallery of the Year 1794 by Jon Alan Boka (2005). Graded VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #25037. Del Bland says EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#6 in his census. Our grade is net VF25+, close to VF30. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 5 finer. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP
