- MEXICO. Sombrerete de Vargas. War of Independence. 4 Reales, ND (ca. 1811). Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-20.
cf. KM-289 (for countermarks); cf. KM-175 (for host); Ramirez-S4.1.1 (same). This rather unassuming piece tells a fascinating story. Although the planchet is worn nearly entirely flat, the host coin can be identified as a 4 Reales piece struck by Royalist forces in Sombrerete, with the name of the assayer Jose Maria "Vargas" Machuca. One side displays the countermark "C.M.S." for "Commandancia Militar Suriana", while the other is countermarked with the eagle atop a cactus with the initials "S.C.M.", for "Soberano Congreso Mexicano". Beside it, the unattributable countermark "VILLA" is visible. A testament to a tumultuous period of Mexican history, this piece offers an enticing yet attainable opportunity for the beginning collector.
Estimate: $150 - $300.
