- "1665" New England Shilling. Fabrication. Newman-NF. Copper. AU-50 (PCGS). 84.9 grains. The copper counterpart to this fabrication type in silver offered above, and every bit as rare. This type is discussed in Frossard's NUMISMA, Vol 5, No. 6 of November 1881, so it was known to numismatists by that time. Ford did not have a copper example. This one with steel overtones to otherwise copper-brown surfaces, the former more widespread on the obverse. The planchet is charmingly out of round with the most prominent projection at 6 o'clock relative to the obverse. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
