1839 Classic Quarter Eagle. Breen-6148. EF-45 (PCGS). Only the one Breen variety for the issue and, although listed in the 1988 <em>Encyclopedia </em>as an 1839/8 overdate, it seems more likely that all known 1839 quarter eagles are examples of a Repunched Date. This richly toned survivor exhibits vivid rose-gold peripheral highlights to otherwise orange-khaki patina. Sharply defined for the garde, and appearing as overall smooth to the unaided eye. Described by Doug Winter (www.pcgscoinfacts.com) as, "...certainly one of the most underrated quarter eagles of this type. The auction records indicate clearly indicate that the 1839 is as rare as the lower mintage 1838-C or 1839-D."
