详细说明: 1842 Liberty Half Eagle. Large Letters. AU-58 (NGC). Although the Large Letters reverse is a trifle more common than the Small Letters version of 1842, not many examples have survived to the present day from the mintage of 14,896 pieces. Here is one of the finest seen, a nudge back from Mint State and tied with six others at this grade level at NGC. The surfaces show moderate circulation marks that blend into the devices and fields. Well struck by the dies, and appealing with a hint of copper-gold in the hair and fields. There was a significant change in the size of the reverse lettering in 1842, the first three years of the Liberty half eagle included lettering which was thin and elegant, but probably left the fields too open for bagmarks. By 1842 on this particular reverse a new larger style letter punch was used on the master hub, this style of lettering continuing in use through the end of the series in 1908.
