- POLAND. Bronze Medal of King Wladyslaw, Undated (ca.1770). Wladyslaw III (1440-44). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder.
40 mm. By Johann Philip Holzhauser, Royal Medalist 1764-1792. High-relief armored bust left of the young king who supposedly died leading his troops into battle with the Turks in 1444 at age 20; Reverse: Thirteen-line inscription noting major events of his reign. According to legend, Wladyslaw felt he had declared war on a false pretext and betrayed his treaty with the Ottoman Turks and that the defeat of his army at Varna was a warning message from God. He then supposedly wandered as a pilgrim, seeking forgiveness, which he finally found in Jerusalem where he became a Knight of Saint Catherine. The legend continues that he then traveled to Portugal where King Alfonso V granted him lands in the Madeira Islands, where he spent the rest of his life in anonymity. Choice deep brown mahogany patina.
Estimate: $100 - $150.
PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder.
