- THE TERRA PISTACIA COLLECTION Ex Eliasberg Collection One of the most interesting Patterns in this offering, this is a muling of two different half dollar obverses: Anthony Paquet's Seated Liberty and James B. Longacre's French Head. This Rarity-7+ is struck in silver with a reeded edge. The uspatterns.com website enumerates seven examples, two of which are impounded in museum collections. Delicate dove-mauve, pale champagne, soft rose, and lilac hues grace the surfaces on both sides. The strike is robust and sharp on both sides. The cataloger in 1996 called this coin MS65 and probably FINEST KNOWN. The fields are moderately reflective with a somewhat muted brilliant underlying flash. This is one of the coolest patterns we have handled and is VERY RARE. The known examples are as follows: 1-Byron Reed Collection; Durham Museum Collection 2-Mitchelson Collection; Connecticut State Library Collection 3-Harry Bass Core Collection, ex Numismatics Ltd, August 1974. (PCGS PR64) 4-Sounders Collection, Bowers & Merena, November 1987, lot 459; Lemus/Queller Collection, Heritage, January 2009, lot 1580 (NGC PR65. uspatterns.com plate coin) 5-H.P. Smith Collection, Chapman Brothers, May 1906; Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr, via Stack's in 1942; Eliasberg Collection, Bowers & Merena, May 1996, lot 237 (the present coin) 6-Kentucky Collection (NGC PR64) 7-Simpson Collection, Heritage, January 2021, lot 3084 (PCGS PR65+) PCGS 2, NGC 2. The Simpson coin sold two years ago for $17,400. That said, this coin is more even in terms of color. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $25,000. We know this GEM will delight even the pickiest of collectors, do not let the fact that the Simpson coin coin recently sold and the Bass coin will be sold later in 2023 deter you from bidding on this fabulous rarity.
