- MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1554-56)-Mo O (O/M). Mexico City Mint. Carlos & Johanna. PCGS EF-45. KM-18; Cal-138. Despite displaying a fairly strong edge split, as can often be the case for these cruder, earlier issues, the present minor offers considerable detail remaining along with a charming, elegant tone throughout. An interesting aspect of this piece is the presence of the over assayer's letter (O/M). When conducting research we were unable to locate any other examples that bear this characteristic for this assayer. Though there is no record of an assayer M, this appears to be an error in the preparation of the die where the mint mark was punched on the wrong side subsequently corrected with the assayer's letter.
