- All Carson City half eagles are very scarce, the 1874-CC being particularly so in AU and better grades (although it is the most commonly encountered date from 1870-1878. This wonderful AU50 is incredibly lustrous for a coin that saw this much friction on the surfaces. The bright golden surfaces do show some richer orange accents in the protected areas of the well struck devices. A scattering of ancient ticks from old west commerce are noted for accuracy, but DO NOT detract from the overall delightful eye appeal. The original mintage of 21,198 half eagles were released into circulation where they would remain for many years. Dave Akers noted that the typical example found in his survey was a VF. To this day, only two coins are known in Mint State at PCGS, both MS62 including the Ellis Robison-Reed Hawn-Battle Born example. The Smithsonian's best example is only a polished XF piece. PCGS 8, NGC 8, CAC 3. The only CAC coin to sell in auction was an NGC example that realized realized $7,475 in November 2012. The only PCGS coin to sell was even further back in April 2011. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $9,500. A neat opportunity to acquire an important $5 Lib for any advanced collector. Cert. Number 84024082 PCGS # 8334
