- Truly a marvelous GEM example of this MAJOR condition RARITY! Despite a generous mintage struck during the war time boom, these are apt to be heavily circulated, as a major recession came at the close of war, and mintages dropped, especially in the early 20s.. GEM Mint State pieces are quite rare, and this one ranks among the highest graded with CAC-approval. A frosty, satin mint luster has a glorious pearly sheen. The strike is impeccable, with essentially fully defined devices. The surfaces are the epitome of PQ Gem quality with no breaks in the frost, and there are no serious marks of any kind. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS 30, NGC 37, CAC 5. The last example to sell in auction brought $38,400 in the 2018 ANA auction, and prior to that, one sold for $24,000 in the 2018 FUN auction. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $20,000. There are fewer than 10 graded higher, none of which appear to be CAC approved.
