- THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION The so-called overdate variety, discovered in 1960. The 1853/2 $10 has, up until the creation of 3rd party grading, been considered a great rarity: David Akers wrote in 1980 that “it would appear to be very rare,” and Walter Breen claimed, “possibly 8-10 known” in 1988. Today, PCGS and NGC have graded fewer than 300 examples (inclusive of duplicates). The 3/2 is faint, with some doubling seen at the curl of the 3 and part of the diagonal of the underlying 2 seen in the lower loop of the 3. This is a totally original example, with choice surfaces, color and eye appeal for the grade. The rich golden color is back lit by a generous amount of retained mint luster. Just some minor contact and the slightest friction is seen from its short time in commerce. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS 20, NGC 35, CAC 7. This coin hammered for $2,500 in our February 2017 Premier Session. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $2,750 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $2,880. A wonderful variety for the Liberty Head eagle collector. Cert. Number 81431093 PCGS # 8611.00
