- If you are seeking a Dahlonega quarter eagle for a type set, the 44-D is one of the more readily available dates from this mint, so it is perfect for type purposes. Lightly circulated, this piece retains a bold luster in the fields. Displaying the typical bluntness of strike from clashed dies there is a wealth of details in Liberty's upper hair curls, bun, and the eagle's wings. There is a hint of glossiness to the surfaces, indicative of an ancient wiping, that has now retoned naturally over a long period, and the eye appeal is very nice, better than the conserved, dipped coins usually seen. PCGS 21, NGC 13, CAC 1. There has not been a PCGS graded AU50 sold since December 2009. So clearly these are not as "common" as David Akers and others make it sound in their references.
