- 1849-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety Two. AU-58 (NGC). Writing in the 2006 book Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, Doug Winter describes the 1849-O as, "...the second scarcest New Orleans No Motto eagle from the 1840s and...one of the most undervalued gold coins from this mint." Only 23,900 pieces were produced, and this issue is actually the rarest New Orleans Mint Eagle in all grades after only the 1841-O, 1857-O and 1859-O.
Also conditionally rare at the near-Mint grade level, the present example exhibits green-gold color that brightens to more of a yellow-gold hue as the surfaces dip into a light. Bright surfaces have some semblance of a prooflike sheen, a feature that is readily evident despite the presence of light rub and wispy abrasions. Sharply struck in the centers, with an overall superior quality of strike for the issue. Highly elusive in AU-58, the 1849-O is extremely rare in Mint State and unknown any finer than BU quality.
