- 1802/1 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-7. Rarity-5. High Overdate. EF-45 (PCGS). A desirable example of this scarce variety with powder-blue and golden bronze patina near the borders. Minor friction is seen in the fields and the protected areas boast satiny luster. A touch of weakness is noted at the left obverse border, but the central elements remain sharp. Particularly intricate detail is visible to the eagle's feathers. An old mark above the 0 in the date serves as a convenient pedigree tracer. Examples of this variety were struck both before and after the early die state of 1803 BD-1, as evidenced by examining the reverse on various specimens. This neatly verifies that 1802-dated coins were struck in 1803 or later, a well known fact, but interesting to contemplate with the evidence given here. PCGS# 8083. NGC ID: 25NX.
