Lovely Mint State Newman 19-Z Fugio Copper Popular Label with Raised Rims Reverse The Ford Duplicate 1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 19-Z, W-6975. Rarity-5. STATES UNITED, Label With Raised Rims, Large Letters in WE ARE ONE. MS-61 BN (PCGS). 1698. grains. An exceptionally high grade for a Newman 19-Z Fugio, finer than the vast majority of examples in numismatic hands. Both sides are richly and originally toned in glossy medium copper patina, the texture lively and satiny. The obverse is somewhat rough along the lower border and within the sun's rays at the right, while the reverse is also rough in the rings below the label. This roughness is due to flaws in the planchet and, as such, is as made. Elsewhere, this piece is sharply defined with most design details visible, and any flaws are minor and easily overlooked by the unaided eye. There is a small patch of what seems to be inactive verdigris at 1 o'clock on the obverse border. Newman Die State A/A. This is a challenging die pairing to find in high grades, particularly as a Guide Bookvariety that sees added demand. The primary Ford coin (lot 310) is clearly the finest although the Ford duplicate, offered here, is also extremely nice. Clearly among the finest known for Newman 19-Z, and eagerly awaiting inclusion in another first rate cabinet. Provenance: Ex St. Louis Stamp & Coin Company, October 1, 1926; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C.
