- 1912 Indian Eagle. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. 1866 Liberty Double Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS). One of classic rarities of the Twentieth Century, Matte Proof gold is simply in a class by itself. Mintages were tiny, in this case 83 pieces were coined and sold to the wealthy collectors of the day. Sales were slow as the new sophisticated Matte style finish looked so completely different than the dramatic Ultra Cameo two-tone eye catchers of the 1890s. Hence few collectors continued buying these historic proofs, and from these meager numbers, many were lost or melted over the Depression the nation endured during the 1930s. Here is one that survived from that tiny issue. Today there are possibly 40-55 that made it through in all. The surfaces have the attractive greenish-gold khaki color with the microscopic interlocking facets that produce the desired flashing specks to the surfaces when examined under a light. There are no copper specks or issues of that nature seen. One or two tiny nicks are present, nudging this piece back from the gem level by a hair. An exceptionally appealing rarity that any specialist will long enjoy for its regal beauty and rarity.
