- Superb 1786 Miller 1-A
1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1-A, W-2460. Rarity-4+. Small Head, ETLIB INDE, Double Chin. VF-30 (PCGS).
98.7 grains. Medal turn. The so-called "Double Chin" variety. A superb example, with choice tan color and smooth surfaces. A little harmless verdigris around legends and design elements serves as little more than contrast and evidence of originality. The obverse is aligned to 9 o'clock, with full denticles and die edge visible on right side, while the reverse shows near ideal centering. A horizontal striation is noted across central reverse, obverse striations are so minor that they look like pleasing woodgrain toning and little more. Very boldly struck for this variety, with the portrait nearly fully realized and only a small soft area at central reverse. Not quite as sharp as the two Boyd-Ford coins, though in the same eye appeal caliber as the second, prettier piece. A popular and distinctive variety, one that has always sold for a premium. Most survivors tend to have problematic surfaces or poor eye appeal, and thus this outpaces most.
PCGS# 325.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection.
