(1800) Washington Funeral Urn Medal in Silver Baker-166a, GW-70 Rarity-6 PCGS graded MS61.Light to medium gray with bright frosty silver in protected areas. Sharply struck and very attractive. Pierced at the top, as always on these historic medals. The only marks are some faint hairline scratches on both sides. Early die state, before any die cracks on the reverse. From the Fuld 1-B die paring. The incuse "GW" on the funeral urn is strong. These were prepared by Jacob Perkins of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and were worn to honor Washington during various ceremonies to honor him following his death on 14 December 1799. Most were struck in white metal, fewer in silver. This is one of the finest examples known in silver and should be a prize for a serious collector of Washingtonia. (Note: This was coin #45,000,000 certified by PCGS, and that milestone is noted on the PCGS label and was announced on the PCGS web site with the following notice: "The company's historic 45 millionth numismatic specimen recently crossed the desks in the grading room of PCGS Headquarters in California. The milestone piece was a special medal honoring the funeral of the first United States President George Washington, who passed away on December 14, 1799. The death of Washington who many saw as the "Father of America," inspired processions to be held in cities around the young nation, including Boston.") PCGS #928. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP
