- GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, 1902. London Mint. Edward VII. PCGS MS-63.
S-3978; KM-803. A well made and bold Crown with mostly satin gray surfaces, an abundance of underlying luster and some almond color at the peripheries.
Edward’s short rule was marked by a reign of a generally peaceful and prosperous Britain. Largely reduced to functionary roles as a dignitary during the long reign of his mother Victoria, Edward came to symbolize the elite of British society. Often regarded as a playboy prince, Edward had an incredible penchant for women, whisky, and cigarettes. Edward both before and after his ascension was preoccupied by foreign affairs, and the naval race that Britain had with Imperial Germany was in no small part influenced by Edward VII. At the end of Edward’s life, the United Kingdom was embroiled in constitutional crisis, with the House of Lords refusing to accent to a budget passed by the House of Commons. Despite his loose nature, Edward VII was quite conservative, and opposed women’s suffrage and Irish home rule. A life of reckless abandon caught up with Edward VII, and he died in 1910 after only 8 years on the throne. During the reign of Edward VII, the Florin underwent a design change bearing a reverse design that is unique to his reign.
