- Remarkable Select Mint State American Plantations Token
Undated (Circa 1828) American Plantations Token, or 1/24 Part Real. Restrike. Newman 4-E, W-1155. MS-63 (PCGS).
144.0 grains. A superb example of the type, nearly as bright and fresh as the day it was struck. Gleaming luster shines on both sides, barely faded in the fields. Only minor raised specks are seen under a glass. The edge beading is much more even and without the clumsy intersection of the two edge dies, a good clue for those who would attempt to distinguish between restrikes and originals from these dies. The strike is flawless and crisp. The best American Plantations token restrikes graded by PCGS have been assigned an MS-63 grade (along with two originals in that grade which are, in all likelihood, also restrikes). This is the best quality one we've seen on the market in ages.
PCGS# 52.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Earlier from B. Max Mehl’s sale of the Burton and High Collections, October 1940, lot 1349; and from our (Stack’s) sale of the Milton A. Holmes Collection, October 1960, lot 1276, at $17.
