- Augustus St. Gaudens' original designs purposefully left off the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, as President Roosevelt felt that having the name of the deity on currency that could be used for immoral purposes, was inappropriate. It was not until 1908 when the motto was put on the Indian Head $10s and St. Gaudens $20s. This is a borderline GEM example that has the initial visual impact of a higher grade. Boldly lustrous with a brilliant golden sheen, the surfaces are generally clean overall, and the devices show off razor sharp definition to the details. The eye appeal is excellent. PCGS 403, NGC 187, CAC 56. There are 31 in MS64+. We sold one in December 2019 for $4,818, and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $5,000, and it jumps to $12,500 in MS65. This near-GEM will see strong bidding and will likely find itself hammering in the spread. Good luck! Cert. Number 37164711 PCGS # 8859
