This is a fantastic, Condition Census S-166, that was unknown to the EAC crowd prior to 2016 when it made its first auction appearance in the modern era, after being discovered in England. A warm, satiny copper brilliance is seen on both sides of this impressive type coin. Generally well struck up devices in the centers show some peripheral weakness in areas. Variegated brown patina, with deeper and lighter shades that pop in a subtle "marbled" pattern. The reverse shows a massive die crack from the rim to the right of the fraction, and curving along the lower left wreath and out to the rim at 9:00. The surfaces are quite clean and free of distracting marks. CHOICE for the assigned grade, and despite its Rarity-1 listing, the S-166 is quite challenging in this lofty state of preservation. PCGS 20, NGC 5. In a January 2021 internet only auction, this impressive Mint State 1798 large cent sold for $11,500 which is the current PCGS Price Guide value. Other examples have sold for as much as $15,600. The PCGS Price Guide value doubles to $23,500 in MS63 BN.
