- 1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. $5 Gold. K-6. Rarity-4. AU-58 (PCGS). OGH. Lustrous yellow gold with warm orange highlights. The famous issue with Liberty's tiara proudly proclaiming PIKES PEAK. A few scattered marks can be found, the largest of these well hidden in the design motifs. A pleasing coin to the unassisted eye, and one that holds up well to careful scrutiny. Generous mint frost adorns both sides.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
The coins of Clark, Gruber & Co., minted in 1860 and 1861, are all collectable today, but some are rare. In 1862 the proprietors sold their enterprise to the federal government and, afterward, the Treasury Department operated it under the name of the Denver Mint. The only problem is that no federal coins were ever struck there. Still Denver Mint persisted for many years afterward, while the facility was used as an assay office and depository. Years afterward, when the new Denver Mint opened, this was indeed a production facility, and coins have been struck there ever since. A significant expansion was taken in 1937.
